Fluorescent Lamp Types Linear Fluorescent Lamps come in 3 common diameters

T12 lamps are 1 1/2 inches in diameter, T8's are 1 inch. T12 used to be the old standard and operated on magnetic ballasts.

T5 lamps are the latest entry into the fluorescent market. Their lengths are different and they will not fit into existing fixtures housing T12 or T8 lamps. T5 lamps come in two families, the standard High Efficiency, like the F28T5 or the High Output family like the F54T5/HO. Both these lamps are just under 4 ft. in length but they operate on different ballasts.

In 2008 GE introduced the first F51T5 which is an F54 Wattmiser, saving 3 watts per lamp but providing the same light output.

The 4 foot T12 and T8 lamps are the most common but 2-foot and 3 foot lamps are also used. The U-shaped fluorescent is used in 2' x 2' fixtures, the 4 foot typically in 2' x 4' fixtures

8 foot lamps are used in industrial locations. They can be Standard, High Output (HO) or Very High Output (VHO) depending on the current they require (controlled by the ballast).
