Mercury Lamps

Mercury Lamps are inefficient and outdated. They should be replaced wherever possible with Metal Halide or HPS lamps.

Metal halide lamps produce about twice the light of a mercury lamp and also provide superior color rendition. GE's I-line of Metal Halide lamps will operate on a mercury ballast replacing 400W or 1000W mercury lamps and no ballast change is necessary. Higher light levels are obtained.

HPS lamps produce two and a half times as much light as a mercury lamp for the same energy, and they have very long life. Most street lighting has been converted over to HPS. The E-Z Lux® line of Lucalox lamps will work on mercury ballasts and are available as replacements for 175, 250 and 400 W mercury lamps. Again, light levels will be higher.

If a customer is interested in saving energy and not interested in higher light levels a ballast change and a switch to a lower wattage MH or HPS lamp might satisfy the customer. Of course, the fixture optics may change slightly with a new type of lamp in it.
