The PulseArc™ line Superior Lumen Maintenance

With a ballast change it is possible to replace MVR400/U with MVR400/VBU/XHO/PA in vertical burn (Base Up) and obtain 40% higher mean lumens.

The PulseArc™ lamp (VBU=Vertical base up; XHO = X-tra high output, PA = PulseArc™) looks similar to the standard Universal lamp and fits in the same fixture. But it operates on a different ballast which includes an ignitor for a "pulse-start" of the lamp. Make sure the socket is "pulse-rated" to withstand the 4000 volt pulse. Most newer fixtures ship with these but some older fixtures might need a socket change.

Any new construction using metal halide lamps ought to use a PulseArc™ system because of the tremendous performance improvement and energy savings.
