| Power Factor | Every ballast has a number called "power factor" or PF associated with it. |

Why is power factor important? If the power factor is close to 1.00, everything is fine, but if the power factor drops to below .90 (e.g. 0.80 or 0.60) the power company may penalize you. It is inconvenient for them to supply power at low power factor.

How can power factor be improved? Many ballasts have a power factor correcting capacitor included. It costs a little extra but it has become standard on most ballasts. Power factor used to be a bigger concern with electromagnetic ballasts, it is not as much of a concern with electronic ballasts.
