INSTRUCTIONS: Enter the correct numbers in the 5 gray cells on the left and press "Calculate". You may change the default numbers provided for cost per kWh, hours burned, etc.. NEXT STEP: If you put in the investment to upgrade (per fixture) and press "Calculate" again you will discover the time it takes--from energy savings alone--to recoup the investment.
This investment should include lamp, ballast and labor required to get the fixture ready; you may subtract any offsetting costs that would have been incurred with the current system. Example: if you were going to relamp anyway, then the labor would wash out and not be included in the investment. Also, you would subtract the cost of the old lamp from the cost of the proposed upgrade lamp as an offsetting cost, figuring out only how much "extra" it cost to perform the upgrade.
